People chose a freelance writing career for a variety of reasons. Some choose to freelance part time to earn extra money. Others decide to quit their jobs and do it full time. Regardless of how you choose to freelance, here are 4 reasons why it's a great gig. 


Time Freedom, Baby!

No other business or career model provides the freedom that freelancing does. Freelancers can choose to work 100 hour weeks or ten hour weeks. They can work on the weekends or during the weekday. They can work at night, in the mornings or anytime they feel like it.

For example, many stay at home parents and caregivers choose freelance, so they're able to earn a living and have a career while they take care of their family. Sure beat a 90 min commute each day and being too tired to enjoy your time with family when you get home. 

If you're a student who needs extra cash to pay for books and tuition, you aren't subject to a boss who doesn't respect your class schedule and gives you the worst shifts possible.

Or if you're someone who has loved writing all your life, but never thought you could make it into a living without a book deal or some other small miracle, the opportunities on the Internet are more vast than ever.

In short, as a freelancer you can have your proverbial cake and eat it too. Or literally. If you want to eat some cake, do it...anytime you want. 

This freedom poses some challenges with work-life balance and meeting deadlines and expectations. But overall, for writers who are organized and dedicated, there is a way to achieve the freedom they're looking for. 


You Make the Decisions

When you work for a traditional company, your boss chooses who you work with. As a freelancer you have the authority and freedom to decide which projects and clients you wish to take on.

Have a potential clients who wants 100 pages done last Tuesday? Buh-bye.

Discover you have a nightmare client who can't seem to make up their mind and doesn't value your time? Fire them.

Now, in the beginning you may want to take on as many clients as you can get. However, as your freelancing career expands, you'll earn the freedom to pick and choose who you work with. You'll be able to work with your ideal clients. It can be a tremendously rewarding and satisfying career.


You Can Work From Anywhere

As a freelancer you're not limited to working out of an office. In fact, for many freelancer writers, the traditional office goes right out the window. You might choose to work from your kitchen table. You may choose to work from a coffee shop. Or you may find a nice park, pool, or ski lodge to work from. Just don't get too wrapped in your writing and remember to do a bit of skiing while you're there.

Technology and the ability to work on your own terms means you get to set the rules here. You choose when, where and with whom you work.

And we think the best part is, you can also work in pajamas all day long, if you prefer. That is, if you're working at home, but if you really want to wear them to the coffee shop, who's going to stop you?


No Need to Ask Permission

As a freelancer, you don't have to worry about those occasional sick days, but do be careful about meeting the deadlines you agreed to. There is nothing more annoying to a client than constant delays and excuses. Manage your time wisely and you'll be able to take care of yourself and your clients.

You can take vacations whenever you feel like it. And you can leave work early to go catch a matinee whenever the mood suits you. Freelancers don't have to ask permission for time off. All of this freedom is well...freeing.
